How to access support?

You might not see yourself as a carer, but if you regularly support someone without being paid because of illness, disability, mental health needs, addiction or frailty, you are a carer.

Step 1 – Contact York Carers Centre

You can contact York Carers Centre for advice or to register with them via their email enquiries@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or by phone 01904 715 490. You can also register here: https://www.yorkcarerscentre.co.uk/start-here/steps-to-get-you-started/register/

Step 2 – Tell people you are a carer

Talk to your friends and family, your GP, your employer, your school/college/university. You can also talk to other carers via events and activities ran by York Carers Centre.

Step 3 – Request a Carers Assessment of Need

If you care for another person who is 18+, you can request an assessment of your needs to explore what additional support may be available to you.

You can do this via York Carers Centre, City of York Council or any social worker you may already have contact with.

This is not an assessment of your ability as a carer, it is about your needs and how to make it easier for you to continue in your caring role.

It is important to look after yourself. It is not selfish. If you do not stay well, you will not be able to continue in your caring role. Your life is important, and you are deserving of a break and some time for yourself.
