Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)

A specialist service for children and young people up to the age of 18 experiencing mental health issues that are significantly impacting their daily lives.

What the service offers?

CAMHS offer assessment and a range of NICE approved (National Institute of Health and Care Excellence) interventions for children and young people who present with moderate to severe mental health difficulties (which are complex, severe and have a significant impact on functioning). This can include individual and group therapies. The service offers support and treatment that covers a whole range of mental health conditions such as; Anxiety, Depression, Psychosis and Eating Disorders using a trauma informed approach.

Who can get help?

CAMHS work with children and young people and their families up to their 18 birthday who are registered with a GP and home address in the local area who are experiencing significant mental health difficulties. CAMHS cover a wide range of mental health conditions but in order to be eligible for their services they need to be having a significant impact on your everyday life for a prolonged period despite other interventions. This means you can’t do everyday tasks like looking after yourself, staying clean, going to school or college and being social with your friends.

How to get help?

If you would like to refer yourself, you can do by calling 0300 013 4778 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Someone will call you back, there are a few different roles that people who work there do, so it might be an administrator, support worker or a clinician who calls you, depending on what you are referring for or what your question is.

If you want to refer yourself for help with ADHD or Autism, you would follow the same process described above; the team will likely ask you and/or your parents and school for some information that will inform next steps and whether an assessment is required.
