Find yourself a counsellor

Find yourself a counsellor

You can also find yourself support privately. Obviously this will cost you but some offer discounts or reduced rates for young people. There are lots of different types of counselling and therapy out there, you need to find the right one for you.

Always look for a counsellor who is registered with a professional body because this means that they are working to a code of practice, have regular training and their work is being supervised. There are a few organisations that do this and they all have a search function on their websites for finding someone near you.

They are:

British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) https://www.bacp.co.uk/

National Counselling Society (NCS) https://nationalcounsellingsociety.org/

British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists (BABCP) https://www.babcp.com/

UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) https://www.psychotherapy.org.uk/

Our Top Tips for finding the right support for you:

  • Getting the right person is so important, you need to be comfortable enough to talk to them about the things that are troubling you and all counsellors are going to try make you feel relaxed and get to know you in the initial sessions.
  • Find someone who offers the counselling or therapy that you want.
  • Check how they deliver sessions, if it’s in person, can you get there on time? If it’s over the phone or a video call, do you have a comfortable and private space to do this?
  • Can you cover the costs, they vary and can be anywhere between £40 – £75 an hour.

What support you need depends on what you are struggling with but ultimately it’s what you’re most comfortable with and what you are going to get most out of.
