PTSD

An anxiety disorder that you experience after a serious, frightening or traumatic experience. People who have PTSD will experience periods of anxiety that are linked to the event that happened to them.

 

Symptoms

  • Flashbacks
  • Dreams or nightmares
  • Panic attacks
  • Feeling on edge or easily startled
  • Result in isolation
  • Loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities

Causes

After an event that causes an individual to feel particularly stressed e.g.

  • Natural disaster
  • War
  • Terrorist attack
  • Witnessing someone die
  • Violence against you
  • A medical emergency

Treatments

Avoiding triggers can help you having symptoms. Counselling can help you to talk about what happened, a therapy called CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) focussed on your trauma or stress management can help to work out ways to manage symptoms of the disorder.
