York College offer a variety of support to their students which are not only focused on studies and attainment. The support also includes offering services to help things such as mental health, well-being and more practical life stuff you didn’t realise they offered support with like money and benefits.

Support at York College

Progress Coaches

Every student at York College is designated a Progress coach who you can talk to about your studies and what you are hoping to do and achieve. Almost an educational mentor for you whilst you are at college.

Well-Being Team

What do they offer?

Following an initial appointment, they can offer:

  • 1:1 Follow Up Sessions
  • Counselling
  • Mental Health and Well-being Workshops
  • Groupwork
  • Practical Advice and Guidance
  • Support Through Self-Help We can refer to and liaise with external services, and we work in collaboration with the School Well-being Service and Voluntary organizations

The Well-being Advisors are specialist trained advisors offering support to students for a wide range of mental health, welfare and well-being difficulties, such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Low Mood
  • Relationship Issues
  • Low Self Esteem
  • Bereavement
  • Family Issues
  • Transition Difficulties
  • College Difficulties

They help students who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, or experiencing other issues with housing. They support students who are having financial difficulties, needing to claim benefits, students who are young carers, young parents, or are vulnerable and needing support for other reasons.

Volunteer Counsellors

Their team of volunteer counsellors offer up to 6 sessions of therapy for emotional and mental well-being. They offer 1:1 therapeutic sessions for low level mental health issues such as anxiety, low mood, relationships, transitions etc. They work alongside the Well-Being Advisors to offer a bespoke package of care.

Mental health first aiders

The college have trained staff who volunteer as MHFA’s, they are available to all students who may be in crisis and need urgent support for mental health and well being issues. They work along

How to access support?

You can access support from our team by coming to one of our daily drop-in sessions. These are held each day 9:00am – 1:00pm

You can also ask for support by speaking to your progress Coach or asking at the Welcome Desk
